The Regional Police Commander, DCOP Kwaku Buodu Peprah, said the suspects would be arraigned after initial investigations.
He said the operation was carried out on Saturday dawn and the miners were arrested operating underground while the two women were picked up on the surface.
“The operation is about galamsey activities at Newmont so following complaints from Newmont administration, we visited the place yesterday and we saw things by ourselves hence we decided to embark on an operation today. So around 4 am we moved to the galamsay site and we were able to arrest about 62 persons, including two women,” he narrated.
The acting Communication and External Relation Manager of Newmont, Samuel Osei, confirmed the arrest and said the company believed in responsible mining and would ensure the right things were always done.
