President John Dramani Mahama, flagbearer of the National Democratic Congress (NDC), for Election 2016 in Ghana, on Monday started his re-election bid in the Northern Region (N/R) amidst street protest in the area, by coalition of opposition parties.
The President is expected to campaign in Tamale, the Northern regional capital, and other parts of the area, which becomes the second stop for the President’s campaign after a tour of the Western Region. The NDC campaign team is expected to visit markets and institutions to tout the achievements of the Mahama government, and solicit votes to retain the NDC in power.
A coalition of opposition parties led by the New Patriotic Party (NPP), disregarded orders of the Police to postpone the demonstration in the region, and vowed to undertake the protest nicknamed ‘Times are hard,’ in the streets ahead of the President’s visit. Other parties of the coalition are the Convention People’s Party (CPP), Progressive People’s Party (PPP), National Democratic Party (NDP) and the All People’s Congress (APC).
The parties are protesting soaring electricity bills and the prices of other items they claim were skyrocketing in the country, and have asked market women, students and all professionals in the region to join the agitation.
