It’s every up-and-coming artistes dream around this clime to get hinged to a record label but it’s even sweeter when you have a Don Jazzy snap you up.
Don Baba J is a veteran and a big player in the Nigerian music industry and his antecedent speaks volumes. Some of Nigeria’s finest music acts have gone through his supervisory. For others their best career highlight was getting to work closely with the multiple award-winning music producer and music mogul.
The entire Mo’Hits, Tiwa Savage, Reekado Banks, Korede Bello etc., are all testimonies of the Don’s midas touch.
However in the past 8 years, Wizkid has been the biggest inspiration to come out of the Nigerian music industry. The name Wizkid or the alias Starboy drives crazy waves amongst fans across Africa and right now beyond the African continent. He is easily the most successful artiste of his generation. The birth of Wizkid signalled a shift in the music industry, he came at a time full blown adults were running things and pulling strings. Wizzy broke the broke the jinx, he tipped the scales and rewrote the whole narrative. A age 20 Wizkid was Nigeria’s finest young music talent with a lot of age advantage.
By an insane twist of fate, Nigeria’s biggest pop superstar did not come through Don Baba J loins. Somehow, after the Mo’Hits era unfortunately elapsed Don Jazzy has been on a quest of signing the next ‘Wizkid’. That explains signing Reekado Banks, Korede Bello who were all quite young talented chaps at the time. Yes, Reekado Banks and Korede Bello made money for the Don but they both combined did not hit the Starboy wave and influence. Reekado Banks and Korede Bello had a few sparks here and there but nothing extraordinary. In fact, Reekado Banks started off sounding very much like type of Wizkid.
The quest continued with Don Jazzy signing the duo called DNA. Unfortunately, they failed to hold Nigerians spellbound for a minute.
Yet again through an affiliation he brought Rema and Crayon on board Mavin Records via Jonzing World and BlowTime Entertainment respectively.
Both Crayon and Rema are quite young with the later being only 18-years of age. Rema was introduced to the world with a bang, without any hints. The Edo State born singer and rapper dropped a self-titled EP on his unveiling and it has been a shutdown for him since. His EP began doing numbers on digital stores like Apple Music, but fans and the rest of the world seems stuck on his smash hit ‘Dumebi’.
A few months passed and Jazzy unveiled Crayon via an all-star tune ‘All Is In Other’. A few weeks later the lad drops a 6-track EP titled ‘Cray Cray’. And he is doing pretty good too.
After assimilating music from Rema and Crayon there is not doubt that the young stars sound very much like Wizkid. Having listened to Rema’s ‘Corny’ and some of those gibberish on ‘Dumebi’ sound like something a ‘Wizkid’ would do. The same can be said about Crayon’s lead single ‘So Fine’. You will hear splashes of the Starboy written over it.
Ladies and gentlemen, is Don Jazzy sourcing for the next ‘Wizkid’ with his new set of artistes???
Anybody who pays attention would notice the mad love Rema receives from the teenage Nigerian generation who are obviously his age mates. They seem taken with his charisma, boyish looks and ultimately his music.
Over the past weeks, Rema and his industry mate Crayon have been performing at Secondary school events, Prom parties and crowds with very young Nigerians.
Just maybe the Mavin Records boss has found a Wizkid for the next generation of the Nigerian music market. From this perspective it seems the Don Jazzy has found the special one(s) with his new signees.
