Some aggrieved residents of Ekumfi Immuna in the Central region have threatened to boycott Ghana’s election next year if the road network leading to the town is not fixed.
According to them, even though they have complained about the nature of their road on countless occasions to authorities, the road is still in a deplorable state.
Wielding a number of placards, the residents marched through the streets Monday to protest against government.
Led by some chiefs and the youth, the residents say they feel neglected and betrayed by the politicians who promised to fix the road.
Yaw Owusu is a 45-year-old trader, who joined the street protest. He recounts how the deplorable nature of the road has affected his business.
“I sell confectioneries. Sometimes we have to pay more to transport our goods from the markets to my destination. Why is our road so terrible that sometimes we have to pay more before we can transport our goods?” he quizzed.
A taxi driver, Edmond Asante, 39, who has been driving for the past decade said: “I have to spend more to repair damages due to the bad nature of the road. It is high time we showed politicians who deceive us that the power belongs to us.”
He wondered what would happen if someone is sick or a pregnant woman is in labour with no car to send them to the hospital.
The residents who are planning to put a big ‘No road, No vote banner’ on the junction leading to the town, have also threatened to deal ruthlessly with any politician who will come to the area for political campaigns.
