An Accra High Court has dismissed a suit filed by the Progressive People’s Party (PPP) challenging the filing fee for presidential candidates set by the Electoral Commission.
The PPP filed the suit after it raised protests against the EC’s GHS50, 000 presidential nomination fees and GHS10, 000 for parliamentary candidates for this year’s general elections.
But the Court on Wednesday struck out the case stating that it lacked jurisdiction to hear the matter, hence its decision to strike out the case.
The PPP was also fined GHc10, 000 by the court.
Speaking to the media after the ruling, the General Secretary of the party, Mohammed Murtala, said “it is not over, we will pursue it at all cost”.
“I’m not sure if the party will have the strength to pursue it before the election, but we will pursue it.
“We have told Ghanaians several times that it is not really an issue about the cost; we want to establish that those discretionary powers given to state institutions are not applied arbitrarily, that’s the point. It has nothing to do with payments,” he added.
