The president’s late night address to the nation declared partial lockdown in Accra and Kumasi from Monday in accordance to the ‘Imposition of Restrictions Act 2020’.
These areas will have their movements restricted for the next two weeks unless for essential items like food, medicine, water, undertaking of banking transactions and using public toilet facilities.
In effect, this is how activities in the areas of Accra will be in the next 14 days all residents in these areas are to stay at home for the next 2 weeks. Like the president stated, if you are not going out for any of the aforementioned essential items, “as much as possible, stay at home”
For Transportation…
- No inter-city movement of vehicles and aircrafts for private or commercial purposes fot the areas of the restricted measures except for vehicles and aircrafts providing essential services and those carrying cargo.
- Riders of motor bikes are not allowed to carry any additional persons.
- All inter-city passenger vehicles such TroTro’s and Taxi’s must reduce the number of passengers in order to observe appropriate social distancing and hygiene protocols.
- All commercial Vehicle stations shall observe appropriate hygiene protocols and social distancing.

If you are worried about how you’ll have access to food within the said period, this is what the president said only persons involved in the food value chain can operate in the markets during this period adding that “The ministry of local government and rural development has also engaged the metropolitan, municipal and district assemblies and the leaders of the market associations in the country to make satisfactory arrangements about the operations of the markets that ensure the observance of social distancing and enhanced hygiene protocols.”
This will mean that you can still go to the market but there are some measures in place you’ll have to follow religiously. Enforcement agencies like the Police will be around to ensure that.

In all these, workers of these industries are exempted from the lockdown as their services will have to go on during the said period. You will want to take note of these areas to make sure you don’t miss work if you have to go.
- Members of the executive, legislature and judiciary
- Production, distribution and marketing of food, beverages, pharmaceuticals, medicine; paper and plastic packages.
- Environmental and sanitation activities
- Staff of VALCO
- Road and Railway Construction workers
- Mining workers
- Fisher folks
- Members of the security agencies assigned lawful duties
- Staff of the electricity, water, telecommunications, e-commerce and digital service providers
- Staffs of filling station
According to the deputy minister for information, Mr.Pius Enam Hadzide, speaking on TV3 yesterday, government in the coming days will add more details that will clarify the issues well. The minister of information on his path used his twitter handle to clarify the fact that journalists are a part of the essential services that will be running despite the partial lockdown.
All of the country’s security apparatus have been employed to ensure that citizens will comply to the measures.
