The week has been filled with as many intricacies of issues related to the Covid-19 outbreak here in Ghana.
The week saw major highlights on measures taken by government especially to prevent the spread of the virus here in Ghana.
It started with the President’s address on updates to the country on Sunday where he amongst other things announced water bills of Ghanaians for the next 3 months (April, May, June) to be paid by the government. An intensified plan to give food to some 400,000 people in the course of the week as well as the local production of Personal Protective Equipments which started on Tuesday.

Lockdown Continues
The city remains under lockdown as the two weeks of lockdown was due to end this Monday, 14th April. However, this period has been extended a week by the president in his last address, Thursday. This means that checkpoints continue to be mounted, national security apparatus are still in town ensuring compliance to lockdown directives and others. There were however news of the Ghana Police Service personnel deployed feein disgruntled about allowances given them as part of this special servive they are rendering to the state. According to them, the 100 cedis allowance as agreed was not given with some claiming they were being payed 50 cedis instead.
President Akufo-Addo, the same week (Thursday) addressed the country for the 6th time to give updates on measures taken by the country so far in its fight against the virus.
Some of the issues touched on inn this address included the additional week extension of Accra’s lockdown (together with those of Kumasi), cuts in prices of electricity; 0 to 50KW/H consumers (lifeline consumers) to be given for free supply whiles those above pay 50% of the cost.

The country also recorded new death cases related Covid-19. This took the number which initially stood at 5 to 6. Currently, the number of deaths stand at 8.
There was also an incident in Tema where a police woman Lance Corporal francisca Tenge was shot close to her thigh by a soldier at a mounted checkpoint. The incident which acording to reports was without any confrontations is currently undergoing investigations. Meanwhile, the officer shot is reported to be responding responding to treatment.
Other issues that made the airwaves were the tracking of how the free food sharing was going in deprived areas marked by the government in the capital. Sharing went on durig the week and issues that needed clarity were clarified by the Minister for Gender, Children and Social protection, Cynthia Morrison at the Ministry of Information’s press briefing on Tuesday.

A Quiet Easter This Year
This year’s easter celebrations had to be marked in a rather silent mode as the city is still under lockdown. With another week’s extension and the cases soaring, it does not look like Accra is going to be “released” anytime soon. Many spots and leisure places that would have seen many patrons trooping in have all been left silent as easter was marked indoors this year. In his address Thursday, the President Akufo-Addo admonished Ghanaians to celebrate this very important christian calendar event away from the normal big crowds.
