Ace investigative journalist, Anas Aremeyaw Anas was adjudged the overall best journalist of the year 2015 at the 21st Ghana Journalist Awards (GJA), held at the Banquet Hall of the State House, in Accra on Saturday.
Anas received a brand new Hyundai SUV car as his prize, due to his recent exposé on corruption in Ghana’s judiciary, in which he ‘captured’ 34 judges on video allegedly taking bribes to compromise justice.
The 21st GJA awards was on the theme: “Media for Undisputed and Peaceful 2016 Election: The Support of Civil Society,” and in all, more than 20 awards were given to journalists in various categories.
The Chairperson of the Electoral Commission, Charlotte Osei, who was the guest speaker at the ceremony, urged journalists to be circumspect in their reportage as the country’s election for 2016 gets closer.
She criticised the use of intemperate language in the media, and urged journalists to double check their facts before publishing stories, saying “Do not base your reportage on mere speculations.”
Mrs Osei appealed to civil society and the media and other stakeholders to collaborate efforts to ensure peaceful elections.
The EC boss said she was confident that the commission would organise another successful election in the history of Ghana, on December 7, 2016.
