President Akufo-Addo will today May 15, 2020, cut sod for work to resume on the abandoned 47-year-old maternity block at the Komfo Anokye Teaching Hospital in Kumasi.
The over 700-bed maternity block and child health block at the Komfo Anokye Teaching Hospital started in 1974 was to help deal with the serious congestion on the existing facility. When completed, the project would be the largest investment made in the expansion of the Komfo Anokye Teaching Hospital since its construction in 1955. The maternity block will consist of 800 beds, nine operating theatres, offices, lecture halls, a staff cafeteria and other ultra-modern facilities to provide a world-class environment for the care of children and mothers.
The government has secured two credit agreements – from the Deutsche Bank and the UK Export Finance totaling 155 million Euros to continue the project. Parliament approved this loan on 12th April 2019. All is set now for work to start on the facility and on Friday 15th May, President Akufo Addo will cut sod for work to continue on the project.
