The outbreak of coronavirus in the capital has forced an interesting phenomenon in the capital Accra as many large bodies are moving their operations online.
After the president’s announcement on some public safety guidelines to be adhered to by the general public, schools and churches had to put a hold on their activities. Here in Ghana and the capital, these two bodies largely thrive on physical gatherings. This has now become a threat because of the epidemic as a key preventive measure is self isolation and avoiding as much as possible all of such gatherings.

With 15 cases out of the current total of 19 recorded in Accra alone, it becomes more of a measure to adhere to and this has been confirmed by all the churches that the move is in line with the directives of the president. This saw a lot of churches move their activities online from bible class meetings to main church services.
At the Action Chapel International for instance, all church services are suspended at all branches will be held for the next four weeks; the period set for a hold on all publi gatherings. In place of this, all services will be held from the church’s headquarters here in Accra whiles members join in online.
Tomorrow will go into records as the first time church services will be held virtually full time.
Schools
Some schools in the capital and even across the the country have taken a similar measure like that of the churches. The Ghana Institute of Journalism has for example taken the innovative end of keeping in touch with students through technology and internet by migrating classes to various online platforms. This move was backed by a notice from the schools registrar. In Ghana’s premier university, the University of Ghana, lectures learning resources including assignments and open forums have all been migrated full time to the school’s online work station for students.
But how are students and lecturers coping with this? Most have raised issues on the cost of data and even network quality for those who have gone back home to areas that are rural and do not have good internet connectivity.

This “phenomenon” for many is one that needs a good eye to be kept on. Ghana has never embraced social media this way before.
