President Akufo-Addo has announced new measures that will be used to help Ghana’s fight against the covid-19 disease in relation to lockdown strategies.
This comes after he officially lifted the lockdown parts of the country was under in his address to the nation Sunday.
“I have taken the decision to lift the three (3) week old restriction on movements in the Greater Accra Metropolitan Area and Kasoa, and the Greater Kumasi Metropolitan Area and its contiguous districts, with effect from 1am on Monday, 20th April…” he said
According to the president, the lockdown will now be instituted should there be a case where some communities record increased numbers of cases of the Covid-19 disease stressing that lifting the ban does not mean the country is out of the pandemic.

“It is important to stress strongly that coming out of the partial lockdown in Accra and Kumasi does not mean we are out of the pandemic. We will continue to monitor closely events in some hotspots in the Greater Accra Metropolitan Area like Weija-Gbawe, Ga East, and Ayawaso East Municipalities, and Tema Metropolis, and in the Eastern Region, like Asuoygaman and Lower Manya Krobo Districts. Whenever the situation so warrants, a community in which the virus is identified as becoming prevalent will be locked-down” he said.
President Akufo-Addo reiterated despite this that the ban on public gathering are still in place as activities such as gathering in churches and mosques are still on hold till further notice. Touching more on the subject matter, president Akufo-Addo said “In here, I am referring to the suspension of all public gatherings, including conferences, workshops, funerals, parties, nightclubs, drinking spots, beaches, festivals, political rallies, religious activities and sporting events. All educational facilities, private and public, are to remain closed” adding “businesses and other workplaces” can go on to operate “with the view to achieving” the precautionary measures such as social distancing and other stipulated hygiene protocols.

The partial lockdown which has been lifted was one of the key measures the government took to control community spread of the disease in the country. This affected some areas like the Greater Accra Metropolitan Area, Greater Kumasi Metropolitan area and some contiguous districts in the Ashanti Region. The first was the ban on social gathering which is still in force together with the closure of the country’s borders.
Citizens have since been encouraged to ensure that hygiene protocols and precautionary measures like social distancing are still observed.
