History was made today after the naming of Prof. Nana Jane Opoku Agyemang as the running mate for John Dramani Mahama for the upcoming 2020 presidential polls.
She becomes the first female to he chosen for such a prestigious position in the history of the National Democratic Congress.
Since the ushering in of the 1992 Republican Republican constitution of Ghana, the party which had ruled Ghana for a total of 16 years has always seen the nomination of a male as the running mate and vice-presidential candidates for all presidential elections.

First was Kwaw Nkensen Arkaah from 1992 to 1996, Late Prof. John Evan’s Fiifi Atta-Mills from 1996 to 2000 then John Dramani Mahama with late Prof. Mills as president from 2008 to 2012 and finally late Paa Kwesi Amissah-Arthur from 2012 to 2016.
The nomination of Prof. Naana Jane Opoku-Agyemang therefore goes down history as the first of it’s kind especially in the history of the two major political parties, the NPP and NDC since the inception of the 4th republic and the 8th female in the entire political history of Ghana.
Undoubtedly, the Ghanaian political space has become one to keep an eye on by her nomination.

She comes in as one who is experienced from a technocratic angle to handling the prestigious ministry of education under the era of President John Dramani Mahama.
She stands to give the party a strong attraction from the women who make a majority of our population. A quick analysis will reveal that for the NDC’s wide grounds, there will be more appeal to the women who will find this as a prestigious position to behold.

President John Mahama described her as “God-fearing, a distinguished scholar, a conscientious public servant and a role model” when he announced the news in a facebook post earlier today.
