Former president and flagbearer of the NDC in the 2020 Presidential Elections, Mr. John Dramani Mahama has celebrated his mother to mark ‘Global Day of Parents’ today.
The day, marked every 1st of June is set aside by the United Nations to celebrate parents and their contributions to children across the globe.
In a tweet, Mr. Mahama said “In celebration of the Global Day of Parents, I want to honour the memory of the woman who made me who I am. You gave birth to me & nurtured me. I draw my patience, tolerance, kindness and humility from this great woman. May your kind soul continue to Rest In Peace”.
‘Global Day of Parents’ gives everyone the chance to celebrate their parents for the vital roles they have played in the nurturing of children and even communities. The day was set aside as a United Nations observance in September of 2012 but is not marked as a holiday.

In the wake of the COVID-19 pandemic, the United Nations in marking this year’s ‘Global Day of Parents’ has called on employers to create “family-friendly workplace policies and practices” that will help promote the well being of children and employees.
They believe that even in these times, children need the support of their parents and at the same time need to carry on with their responsibilities.
A statement by the United Nations readd; “Families bear the brunt of the COVID-19 pandemic. As the anchors of the family and the foundation of our communities and societies, parents have the responsibility of sheltering their families from harm, caring for out-of-school children and, at the same time, continuing their work responsibilities. Without support from parents, children’s health, education and emotional well-being is at risk. By introducing family-friendly workplace policies and practices, companies and organizations will be in a better position to promote children’s safety and wellbeing and provide systematic support to employees.
