Though he is in the twilight of his rich career, admitting that he does not rehearse as long as previously, veteran musician Bessa Simons says he, however, spends some time teaching the craft.
But his teaching is dedicated solely to women.
To him, the music scene in Ghana needs more women and that is what he has resorted to providing.
He said this is what has translated to his role as the music director for Dela Hayes and Dzesi, the popular all-women’s band.
“I want to flood the music scene with women,” the Acting President of the Musicians Union of Ghana (MUSIGA) told host Martin Asiedu-Dartey on 3FM’s Sunrise on Thursday morning.
He was on the show to discuss the state of high-life music, his aspiration to head MUSIGA substantively, among others.
He said conscious effort needs to be put into sustaining Ghana’s high-life as it is what the country has been known for all over the world.
Bessa Simons, who has several hit songs to his credit, says he has been asked several times why Ghanaian musicians are shying away from a genre that became a cachet for the country.
He recommended collaborations between the old and the new, urging them not to shy away from one another.
“The old are shy of the new and the new are shy of the old,” he observed.
Bessa Simons will be one of the judges for the revived music reality show, Mentor, which is set to return in November.
