Former president, Jerry John Rawlings and his wife, former first lady Nana Konadu Agyemang Rawlings joined mourners at Manhyia, Kumasi, to pay their last respect to Nana Kwesi Agyemang, a former Municipal Chief Executive of Kumasi and Deputy minister of state.
The late Nana Akwesi Agyemang who served under the erstwhile Rawlings regime is widely known for his long reign as mayor of Kumasi and a “no nonsence” leader at that. Later, he was appointed as the Deputy Minister of Environment for the Northern Sector.

Paying tribute to the late Nana Agyemang who was popularly known as “Okumkom”, President Rawlings said he was a vibrant leader who was always at the right place at the right time. According to him, his sterling leadership contributed to the success of the government of the day.
A report by graphic.com.gh quotes him; “Discipline was key in achieving his objectives and he was not one to stay in the office and bellow out orders. He bellowed out orders all right, but out in the open, directly supervising and exhibiting an enviable hands-on approach. He enjoyed working and the tempo of the revolution sat well with his temperament.’’
Also in attendance at the durbar with Asantehene Otumfuo Osei Tutu sitting in state were former presidents John Agyekum, Kufuor and John Dramani Mahama. Vice-President Dr. Mahamadu Bawumia, Chief Justice and other dignitaries are in attendance.

Nana Akwasi Agyeman died at the age of 86 and was laid to rest on Monday night after a burial service at the St. Cyprians Anglican Church in Kumasi. He stands as the longest serving mayor of Kumasi in office for over 20 years. Okumk0m served as mayor for Kumasi under various governments of the NRC, SMC I and II, PNP and (P) NDC. He died on the morning of Tuesday, 23rd January this year in Kumasi after an illness. He is also a royal of the Asante Kingdom.
