The Miami FC midfielder Kwadwo Poku has been called up to Ghana’s 24-man squad by head coach Kwesi Appiah for their two upcoming qualifiers.
This marks the second national team selection of the calendar year for Poku, who is looking to become a staple in his national side for years to come.
Poku has made two appearances for the Black Stars, coming on as a substitute against Canada in October of 2015 and most recently against the United States in a 2-1 loss in East Hartford, Connecticut.
Ghana’s upcoming two matches are crucial home and away encounters against Congo, a team that Ghana is competing against to qualify for the World Cup.
The Black Stars have just one point through two matches in their qualifying group, where only one team can advance to the World Cup Finals. Egypt tops the group with six points, while Uganda is in second place with four.
Two consecutive matches against Congo, which has lost its first two matches by one goal each, can spring Ghana forward and provide some momentum for the final two matches.
As evidenced by their zero goals scored in their two third round qualifying matches, Ghana lacks some creativity in attack. That’s where Poku can step in and provide some playmaking ability, whether as a starter or as a substitute.
Poku and the Black Stars take on Congo at home on September 1 and away on September 5.
