Bayern Munich II striker Kwasi Okyere Wriedt made his debut for Ghana’s national team on Thursday, coming on in the 82nd minute in a 2:0 win over Japan.
Wriedt, 23, moved to Bayern last summer from Osnabrück and led the team in scoring this season, finding the back of the net 21 times and assisting seven. He even made an appearance for the first team against RB Leipzig in the DFB Pokal and was a part of Jupp Heynckes’ match day squad on a number of occasions.
Wriedt was obviously delighted to be able to represent his country.
“I’m unbelievably happy and proud to have been able to make my international debut. To be able to walk on the pitch for my country was a big honor. It was a special feeling when my name was called and I was able to put on the jersey,” Wriedt said post game in an interview with Bild. “I was tense, but full of anticipation. I’m very happy that we were able to show a good performance and leave the pitch as winners.”
Speaking of the jersey, Wriedt, born in Hamburg to Ghanaian parents, said he already knows what he’s doing with his. It’s going home to mom.
“It’s going to have a special spot in the house,” said Wriedt.
The jersey will likely join his Bayern jersey from his debut game, which he also gave to his mother.
Wriedt, nicknamed “Otschi”, has a contract in Munich that runs until 2020, and he has indicated that he’d some day like to play higher up.
“Some day I want to play in the first or second division,” he said in a recent interview with Transfermarkt.
A 21-goal season in the Regionalliga will certainly leave him with no shortage of suitors should he decide that he wants to leave this summer.
Wriedt and Ghana will play their second friendly on June 7th when they take on Iceland.
