Lightweight contender, Richard Commey recorded a unanimous decision over Belgian Hedi Slimani in the World Boxing Council (WBC) International Lightweight Silver Title at the Bukom Boxing Arena.
All three judges scored in favour of Commey, with a score of 116-112, 117-113 and 116-112.
An event put together by Streetwise Promotions and Errol Hawks Sports Management, as part of the 60th Anniversary Celebration of Ghana, saw Commey, picking up a pre-match injury during training, but managed to live up to expectation.
It was a convincing win over the European, as Commey dominated the fight in most rounds and nearly knocked out the visitor in the 12th round after intense exchanges in the middle of the ring.
The fight was witnessed by president Nana Addo Dankwah Akuffo Addo, former president JJ Rawlings and other high profile dignitaries.
Commey, was accurate with his punches and body swerves that ensured, he avoided some deadly punches from Slimani.
Nevertheless, he had a cut in the fourth round on top of his left eye and fought through some pain.
However, Commey came up strongly in the seventh round and delivered a hefty punch on his right eye which opened a cut on him.
From the seventh round was intense exchanges with Commey dominating and landing the accurate punches to emerge as the winner.
Commey expressed appreciation to all who made the event a success.
He promised Ghanaians a world title in the near future.
Frederick Lawson also secured a majority decision (116-113, 114-114 and 119-109) over Jamaica’s Sakima Mullings to win the vacant WBC international silver welterweight belt.
Though it was a not a five-star performance from the Ghanaian, as he was fighting for the first time in two years, Lawson stood to the test to claim the vacant belt at stake.
In the other bout, Duke Micah reigned supreme over Mexico’s Jonathan Aguilar as he stopped the visitor in round nine to win the vacant WBC international bantamweight title.
