The Ghana Private Road and Transport Union (GPRTU) has condemned the approximate increase of transport fares by some commercial motorists in the country.
The GPRTU stated the action of such motorists is “regrettable”.
The motorists increased the fares due to the fact that, according to them, the price of fuel on the international market, has actually fallen considerably but costs remain the same at the pumps in Ghana regardless of the government’s regulation to motorists to pick fewer travelers as part of social-distancing protocols to reduce the spread of COVID-19.
But the GPRTU, in a declaration, stated: “We want to make it clear that there are procedures for the decision of transportation fares in the nation. Among the significant items thought about during a fare evaluation is the cost of petroleum items which have seen some decreases because of the last transportation fare increase in September 2019.”
The GPRTU has, therefore, encouraged all of its members to preserve the existing transportation fares and abide by the laid-down procedure for the determination of transportation fares.
Commercial drivers in the Accra Metropolis complied with the directives on the reduction of the number of passengers in conformity with the Presidential directives on social distancing against the spread of COVID-19.
