Leadership of the National Council of Parent Teacher Associations (PTA’s) have expressed shock at the Electoral Commission’s decision to carry out voters’ registration exercise in schools for their wards who have attained the voting age.
According to Mr. Alexander Danso, President of the Council of PTA’s, the association was not consulted in arriving at the decision although they are also major stakeholders.
“We had the news around 7 O’clock or so and I was surprised. I don’t know whether they had already discussed the issue with school management, Ghana Education Service, Ministry of Education and all that but as for the PTA, we are not aware. We were not informed” he said.

Speaking on TV3’s News at 10 Thursday, the president said that as parents and major stakeholders, the agreement was for their wards to return to school and complete their semesters and write their final exams.
“When schools were going to re-open, we were not told that the students were going to be registered in their various schools” he said, adding that there was no way that decision was going to be rescinded since the exercise commences today; something he described as unfortunate.

A major concern for the association is the safety of the children in the process especially due to the fact that students stand the risk of infection from outside questioning “the necessary health protocols have been observed but yet we have some cases in the schools. What extraordinary measures are they going to put in place?”
He however maintains that with the decision made, there is nothing they could do about it. He also revealed that the Council of PTA’s will be giving their statements on recent happenings in the Accra Girls Senior High School and the KNUST Senior High School where there have been some uprising due to fears of COVID -19 in the various institutions.
