Convener of the ‘Let My Vote Count Alliance’, Mr. David Asante, has in a press conference today in Kumasi said that “nothing in our current political dispensation can stand in the way of the electoral commission to compile a new register” because it is their constitutional mandate.
According to reports by Starr FM’s Starr Midday News today, they are in close talks with the commission and whatever the other parties do, they are ready to protect the electoral commission to work independently.
“The announcement of a new voters register has once again been met by fierce resistance from some civil society organizations and political parties. Prominent amongst them is the NDC but the electoral commission thinks that a new voters’ register is a necessity” he said
The alliance believes that demonstrations by the Inter-Party Resistance Against New Voters’ Register was futile because the voters’ register contains names of foreigners whose name ought not to be there making it appropriate for the EC to compile a new one.
The EC has given enough technical reasons that amount to the need for a new register adding that they are not there as a mouthpiece for the electoral commission but as Let My Vote Count Alliance; the group that has led the call for a new register.
