Hon. Yaw Buabeng Asamoah, the member of Parliament for Adenta Constituency for the NPP says that they do not need a new voters’ register to win the 2020 elections because their works so far speaks for them.
Speaking on Kingdom FM last Friday, he said that his party has worked hard and is very hopeful that by the end of the 2020 elections, they will come out tops.
“We don’t need a register in order to win. If you don’t have anything to tell the people, it’s not the register you should use as a case. In 2004, a new register was compiled; the NPP was in power at that time. Did we not lose the elections in 2008? We lost woefully…2012, we pushed for the EC under Charlotte Osei to compile a new biometric register; for that, they won. 2016, they lost the elections with that same register. So we don’t depend on a register to win elections.” he said.
According to him, it is normal to see parties and groups oppose the Electoral Commission like the Inter-Party Resistance Against A New Voters’ Register is currently doing because that has been the trend since the time of Dr. Kojo Afari Gyan. He said “But when it comes to the electoral commission, from the time of Afari Gyan, you can see that there is no electoral commissioner that some group has not disagreed with. Oduro Anim Apau started till we came to the time of Afari Gyan; you remember that in 1992, we wrote stolen verdict. We-NPP MP’s then- did not go to parliament because we believed that the presidential elections were rigged. We stayed out of parliament…” adding that it is better to be there for the sharing that to be outside.
Mr. Buabeng Asamoah believes that demonstrations will not work since the commissioner and the commission have the power to compile a new register if they so wish to because the constitution grants them the power.
