THE Dagbon Traditional Council last Saturday ordered the Yendi Divisional Police Commander,
Chief Superintendent Peter Akokor Ayirezang, to leave the area for allegedly disrespecting the Dagbon
king, Yaa-Naa Abukari Mahama II.
Residents of Yendi, acting on the authority of the king, kicked out the police chief for arresting and
detaining representatives of Yaa-Naa, who had gone to assist the king to resolve a disputed chieftaincy
case that was also under police investigation.

Abu Zolge, a former Presiding Member of the Yendi Municipal Assembly, said the king gave the police
commander up to 7:00 pm to leave Yendi for his “disrespectful behaviour.”
According to him, the decree was made around 5:00 pm and “the youth came out in their numbers and
asked him to obey the order given by the overlord of Dagbon.”
He narrated further that the Yaa-Naa did not listen to a plea on behalf of the officer by the BNI
Director, the Crime Officer and the District Commander, compelling Chief Supt. Ayirezang to leave
Yendi around 6:30 pm.
Mr. Zolge explained that the police commander invited two sub-chiefs in a dispute in the Tatale area to
assist the police in investigation.

He said the invitation came three days after Yaa-Naa Abukari Mahama II had settled the matter and,
therefore, sent some of his subjects to inform Chief Supt Ayirezang about the status of the dispute after
prevailing on the sub-chiefs to honour the invitation.
He disclosed that the police commander ordered the arrest and detention of the messengers upon
reaching the divisional police headquarters.
Zolge said Yaa-Naa again sent a representative to the police chief, but the person was allegedly sacked.
He indicated that Yaa-Naa got infuriated when information got to him about the action of the police
commander, thereby ordering for his exit from Yendi with immediate effect.
Chief Supt Ayirezang had since left Yendi and proceeded to Accra after his superiors had recalled him.
“I have left Yendi because if you are with someone and he says he can’t work with you, what can you
