The three suspects arrested in connection with the murder of two police officers on duty at the Buduburam Camp, near Kasoa, in the Central Region are expected to be taken to court on Friday, August 30, 2019.
The Central Regional Police Public Affairs Director, DSP Irene Oppong, has therefore promised that they will follow the criminal justice system of Ghana without violating the rights of these suspects.
Sergeant Michael Djamesi and Lance Corporal Mohammed Awal were conducting a motor check along the Kasoa to Buduburam stretch when they signaled an unregistered Toyota Camry to stop.
The driver reportedly refused so two policemen in a police car chased them.
But at a point, the occupants in the unregistered car started shooting at the police personnel. One died instantly while the other, who was severely injured, later died at the Police Hospital in Accra.
The all-male suspects are being held at the Kasoa Police Station. They are Ibrahim Zakaria, Isaac Amissah and Dominic Commey while a fourth accomplice, Duah, is on the run.
The Acting Inspector-General of Police (IGP), James Oppong-Boanuh, has dispatched a team from the headquarters to support the Central Regional Command in its investigations.
DSP Irene Oppong, in an interview with Onua FM’s Yen Sempa on Thursday assured that “we shall follow the criminal procedures of Ghana and take them to court in due time”.
She said the suspects were arrested on Wednesday around 4:00pm so the police have 48 hours within which to prepare and send them to court and they would work within this period to take them to court.
“We arrested them [Wednesday] around 4pm. We have up till tomorrow 4pm to be 48-hours and so we promise we will not violate their rights,” DSP Oppong told Yen Sempa host Bright Kwasi Asempa.
Interrogation
The police PRO said investigations have begun and the suspects are being interrogated for further information on the murder.
“We are interrogating them and any evidence we can gather that could lead us to make any arrest, we shall make the arrest.”
DSP Oppong said “it’s too early to make known the content of their statement”.
