Three University of Ghana (UG) students, have started their Masters scholarships with the University of Limerick in Ireland, studying Computer Science and Computer Engineering.
The scholarships follow from the ground breaking MOU signed last year between the two educational institutions; the first between an Irish and Ghanaian university.
The three awardees Dzidzor Adogla-Bessa, Joseph Yeboah Nortey and Susan Mills graduated with first class honours from Computer Science and Computer Engineering at the University of Ghana.
The Ghanaians have already met students from all over the world during orientation and have been exploring the city and the campus.
The agreement is to facilitate the collaboration between the institutions and to develop models of cooperation in a number of areas including education and in academic research.
The signing ceremony took place in 2015 during the visit to the University of Ghana by the Irish Minister for Agriculture, Food and the Marine, Simon Coveney T.D. and Ireland’s Ambassador to Nigeria, Ghana and Senegal, Sean Hoy.
In addition to the scholarships, the agreement would mean staff and student collaboration between the universities and joint projects.
It also means increased access to the Erasmus Mundus EU programme for UG, a programme that encourages and facilitates academic exchanges across the globe.
It is planned for later in the academic year for UG staff to visit the University of Limerick to kick start the collaboration at the faculty level.
University of Limerick is the largest recipient of Erasmus funding of any tertiary institution in Ireland for the 2016-2017 academic year.
The University of Limerick, Ireland was established in 1972 and was named ‘University of the Year’ 2015 in the Sunday Times Good University Guide.
UL’s leading position in graduate employability, strong research commercialisation, the € 52 million Bernal Project in science and engineering and a rising academic performance were among the reasons for the Award.
The UG was established in 1948 and is Ghana’s oldest and largest tertiary institution.
It is the highest ranked university in Ghana. It is seeking to become a world class research-intensive University over the next decade and is focused on enhancing the quality of post-graduate programmes and research.
